Lifestyle Coaching

As I prepare to offer a workshop in May, I have had many thoughts running through my mind. The “Why am I doing this?” phrase has been placed in the closet to be given to good will.  I know why I want to do this. I want to help people!  I have done a lot of things, had many experiences (good and not so good), have solved many problems, listened to peers and students and friends and family.  So, I think I can do this. This new chapter in my life is called Life Coaching.  It is not in the pursuit of money and fame.  But, it is in the fulfillment of a life goal.  I became a certified life coach in 2010.  I have read, talked, taken courses, listened to other gurus, consulted with those I trust…now it is time for me to step up and do this.

My first workshop will be about stress. It is called “Spinning in Place: finding one’s balance”. It is currently directed at women.  I absolutely want to help women. But, would not be opposed to helping men too.  It is just that I have a comfort zone right now with women. But, the way things are going in my life, I would not be surprised if I had coed audiences this year!

I am excited, nervous, happy, and starting to feel a completion happening in my life.  So, I will update the preparation process for anyone interested in making new starts.

My company’s name is  In My Own Voice.  Wish me luck…

A Season of Hope and Spring

I was thinking this weekend about so much around us that is good.  That can often be difficult because there is so much saddness, anger, bad words from adult people.  We have racism. We have bigotry against gay people, liberals, women, education, helping others just because… Where can HOPE come from.

Hope comes from friends and neighbors checking on you to see if you are all right.  Last year, I had only  lived in Massachusetts for 5 months, when I came down with the flu. (And yes, I did have a flu shot).  I was one of those people who got another strain.  I had met people and some I knew from my previous visits here.  At least 3-4 people checked on me every day! Can I begin to explain what that does to one’s spirit. It was incredible. I believe we care about each other.  We just don’t always know how to show it.

Hope comes from family near and far.  Now, I moved to Massachusetts to be near my family (especially my grandchildren!). But, I have a wonderful aunt, Theda, who will be 91 this July.  She’s in Texas with her oldest daughter and one of my closest friends (and cousin). I keep in touch with as many of the relatives that are left in my family.  Then there is adopted family.  That is a blessing right there.  If your parents are gone and you have children, adopt an elder and treat her and/or him like “Grandma” or “Grandpa”. It is so essential for the young to connect with the elders!

Hope comes from youth.  I know we think all of our youth are uncaring and uninvolved.  But, I beg to differ with you.  I have watched youth caring about so many things (including parents, grandparents, and other elders). They just need guidance and some suggestions as to where to look.  That comes from us.  Then, they need listening from us.  Wow! They have so much to say and they do care about their communities and the state of the world now and the future. Ask them (after you get to know them) and you will be wonderfully surprised.

Hope is in each other-friends, family, acquaintances, business people, neighbors, everyone.  Most everybody responds well to a smile. Think about what you are grateful for. It could be that you are alive, your child said something nice, a friend gave you a hug, you had a positive impact on someone, you are just “you” !

Hope is just being alive as we approach springtime and the budding of new beginnings in our lives. I have hope and I know that all will be well with us no matter what we have wrong with us.  Find the good and great things in your life and dwell on them (a lot).  Watch out, more good and great things will be happening to you. Watch for that door opening. Don’t be afraid to go through it…it’s opportunity.  Opportunity to start a business, make a friend, help someone else, make someone smile…it opens the rest of your life! What an adventure to have! What a life to lead!

Help me continue to promote a season of Hope and Spring… Read the rest of this entry »

Playing Politics with People’s Lives!

I have much concern these days as I look at the Republican primary. Much has been said by Mitt, Rick, Newt and Ron that makes me hope and pray that they never become President of the United States. No president has been perfect by any means.  As much as I like President Obama and will be voting for him in 2012, I do not agree with all of his policies.  But, I believe that he has a genuine belief in this country and in the betterment of all people (even the wealthy).  What is not clear to me is the constant references to our current president ( Barak Obama) questioning  his citizenship, his religion, his ideas and heart for the people of the United States.

Well folks, the man really does not walk on water and he is not the second coming.  But, if we really want to see change and not so much compromising, we had better change the outlook of Congress (both Senate and House) in  2012.  Even a president as smart as Pres. Obama cannot push legislation through when he has a Congress that would rather see the country fail than the President succeed.  I was never a fan of Pres. Bush (W), but I did not want the country to fail, just to prove I was right about him not being the right kind of president for that time.  He proved that himself! But, had he succeeded, I would have been glad for the sake of all those who eventually lost and could not find employment, for those who could not get good medical care, for children of immigrants who cannot continue their education because they are undocumented, for all those who fell below the poverty line because of the forwarding of policies that hurt most of us.

Please people take a look at what people are saying about women’s reproductive rights, about social security and medicare, about education and business and especially about Affordable Health Care! Please stop trying to destroy the Black guy and care about the majority of us in this country….

The concept of Life coaching

I started this blog so that I could find a meaningful way of expressing myself without the limited words of a tweat. I have always been known as verbose, wordy, etc. and using twitter kinda frustrated me.
I spent almost 30 years as a high school teacher and 10 years in the business world. When I retired from teaching (my passion),
I needed to continue to reach out and help people. I have a dear friend, Akua Afiriyie Bediako, who gave some of us the “Passion Test”. It was so impressive, I became interested in doing other things that could also help people. She showed me the idea of Life Coaching. I was overwhelmed with a sense of purpose. For that, among the many other things that Akua helped me with on this journey, I will be forever grateful. By the way, Akua is also a successful life coach..Ayo! Living Life in Joy!
Another person who had an impact on me was Gloria Rodriquez with DeAlmas. I attended several of her workshops and was truly inspired and motivated to go about living my best life.
My Godmother, Oseye McHawi, continued to push and inspire me every year to “Do your own thing, girl. You can do it!” For her constant encouragement and love, I thank her.
My other Godmother, Lorraine Melendez, helped me get past the idea of ” can I really do these things to help others” and we continue to encourage each other.  Her specialty is Reiki and Crystals called

Amber Radiance“. She is part muse and part cheerleader.

Then, there is the wonderful people I have met in Amherst, Massachusetts where I now reside happily! I left New York after an unnecessarily nasty divorce (unfortunately, most divorces seem to be nasty and lengthy!). I wanted to experience my grandchildren growing up and help out my daughter and son-in-law.

Life Coaching: what is it? It’s definitely a relatively new “buzz” word.  But, often when something is new, it is often misunderstood.  We are definitely not psychiatrists, psychologists or therapists (although, I have met those who are therapists in their own right and are also coaches – wow to them).  We LISTEN to you. We listen like no one else listens to you.  We are interested in everything you say. Our purpose is to help you with perspective.  It is problem solving through a powerful process of communication.  Most people have their own answers. But, it is often helpful to have some other perspective and encouragement in finding those answers.

Can one make a lot of money this way? Yes, and many do quite well. Is that my main goal. Fortunately, it is not.  My goal is to continue to use everything I have learned on my life journey to help or enlighten someone else. I will accept making money, if that is what happens. But, that will never be my ultimate motivation as a coach.

So, for those who wish to follow me: Welcome! I hope I say things that inspire you, make you think,or help you in any way. Here go my beginning baby steps…
